A quiet Lake Victoria beach in Mpigi for swimming, boat rides and beach games, and home of the Buganda Royal Regatta canoe race.
Bunjako is a lakeside beach on a peninsula on the Lake Victoria shore, in Mawokota County, Mpigi District. It is reached from the Kampala to Masaka road via Buwama, and it feels much quieter than the busy city beaches.
Open lawns, palm trees, a rope swing and wide views across the water make Bunjako an easy, affordable beach day for friends, families and teams. It also has a special place in Buganda culture as the home of the Buganda Royal Regatta.
Bunjako hosts the Buganda Royal Regatta, Amaato ga Kabaka, the kingdom’s revived traditional canoe race. Teams from Buganda’s 18 counties paddle for the honour of their area. The 2026 grand final was held at Bunjako on 22 August, marking the 33rd anniversary of the Kabaka’s coronation. If your visit falls on race day, expect drums, colour and big crowds. On ordinary days we can arrange a fish lunch cooked by local fishing families; it is included in your trip, so what you pay goes to them.
Bunjako is good all year, and best on a dry, sunny weekend. Check the regatta calendar if you want to see the canoe race, or avoid it if you want a quiet day.
Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours from Kampala via Buwama.
Open day trips need at least 10 travellers. Bunjako is a relaxed day, Level 1, with no long walks.
