Ssezibwa Falls is a series of waterfalls on the Ssezibwa River in Mukono District, a short drive off the Kampala to Jinja road, about 35 km east of Kampala.
It is a beautiful picnic spot, but for the Baganda it is much more: a sacred place. The story goes that a woman called Nakangu gave birth to twins who became two rivers, the Ssezibwa and the Bwanda. The site is linked to the Kabaka’s title Ssabalongo, “father of twins”, and people still come here to pray, give thanks and ask for blessings. The name is usually explained as “cannot be blocked”.
Ssezibwa is a living sacred site. Traditional healers, worshippers and also Christians come to pray, and you may see offerings or quiet ceremonies. Your guide explains what is happening and why the place matters to Buganda. It is a rare chance to see faith and tradition side by side, not as a show but as part of daily life.
Ssezibwa can be visited all year. After heavy rain the rocks are slippery, so we check conditions before going.
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours from Kampala and about 1 hour more from Entebbe. It pairs well with Mabira Forest or Jinja on the same day.
Please respect people at prayer and ask before taking any photos of them. Facilities are basic (paths, picnic areas, toilets, small craft and drink stalls), and visitors report that upkeep varies. The rocks can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip. The walk is easy, Level 2.
