Ziplining

What it is

Wearing a harness clipped to a steel cable, you slide high above the ground. Near Jinja you fly right across the River Nile; in Kalangala and Mabira the lines run through the forest, so you get adventure and nature views together.

Where in Uganda

• Zip the Nile, near Jinja: at Living Waters Resort in Bukaya, on the west bank of the Nile across from Jinja. The course is about 620 metres over the river, with a “Superman” line where you fly lying flat, head first, and a line where two people ride side by side.
• The Address Resort, Kalangala: a forest adventure park on Bugala Island in the Ssese Islands, with a zipline, a canopy walk and net climbing.
• Mabira Forest: at Griffin Falls, near Lugazi in Buikwe District, where the line runs through the treetops.
• Extreme Adventure Park, Busiika: north of Kampala, with a zipline next to high and low ropes courses, in a park that also has go-karting and quad biking.

What to expect

A zipline session itself is short, but with the safety briefing and the walk to the start it takes 1 to 2 hours; a Mabira visit with the forest walk takes about 3 to 4 hours. Staff check every harness and helmet before you go. It works well for friends, youth groups and staff teams, and pairs with a Jinja river day or a Kalangala weekend.

Activity level

Level 2, Easy. There is some walking, and you need a head for heights, but little strength is needed.

Good to know

• Each site sets its own age and weight limits. Zip the Nile reports a minimum age of 6.
• Not suitable if you have heart or spine problems, or are pregnant. Ask us before booking.
• Follow the staff’s braking instructions.
• Wear closed shoes and leave loose items behind.
