Why you will love this trip
Western Uganda packs forest, hot springs and savannah into a few hours of driving, and this trip shows you all three. In Kibale National Park, the best place in East Africa to track wild chimpanzees, you follow a UWA ranger through the forest to spend up to one hour with a chimp community as they feed, call and climb. In Semuliki, a piece of the Congo rainforest, boiling water bursts out of the ground at the Sempaya hot springs. In Queen Elizabeth National Park you take a boat along the Kazinga Channel past hippos, buffaloes and elephants, and look for lions on an early game drive.
Every wild day has a people day. In Bigodi, villagers who protect their own swamp lead you along its boardwalks, and the income has helped build a local school. Near Queen Elizabeth you meet the families of Leopard Village and the salt workers of Lake Katwe.
You travel privately in a hired 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced driver-guide, staying three nights near Fort Portal and two nights near Queen Elizabeth, so the pace stays calm. The trip suits curious travellers of average fitness.
