Slow down and walk with a ranger or local guide through forest, wetland or savannah, looking for birds, monkeys, butterflies and plants.
A guided walk on foot through forest, wetland or savannah. Walking lets you notice what a vehicle hides: butterflies, medicinal plants, animal tracks and bird calls. Your guide explains what you see and how local people use the forest.
Mabira Forest near Lugazi, an easy day trip from Kampala. Bigodi Wetland next to Kibale, run by a local community group. Waterfall trails in Bwindi. Walking safaris in Lake Mburo, among zebras and impalas. Maramagambo Forest in Queen Elizabeth. The Entebbe Botanical Gardens.
Walks take 1 to 4 hours. You go as a private group with a ranger or community guide; inside national parks an armed UWA ranger leads the walk. Mornings are cooler and best for birds.
Level 2, Easy, for most walks. Longer or hilly walks, such as those in Bwindi, are Level 3, Moderate. We tell you which before you book.
Price (UWA guided walks, per person, plus park entry): USD 40 FNR, USD 30 FR, UGX 30,000 EAC in Bwindi, Mgahinga, Kibale, Mount Elgon, Semuliki and the Rwenzori; USD 25 FNR, USD 20 FR, UGX 20,000 EAC in Murchison, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo, Kidepo and the wildlife reserves. UWA’s current prices are valid to 31 December 2026; new UWA prices start on 1 January 2027. Walks outside UWA areas: Price on request.
