Walk with a ranger at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to watch southern white rhinos, on the way from Kampala to Murchison Falls.
Rhinos died out in Uganda in the early 1980s. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is bringing them back, with a growing herd of southern white rhinos. A ranger leads you on foot through the bush to watch a rhino family from a safe distance, and explains the work that keeps them safe.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola District, about 3 hours’ drive north of Kampala. It breaks up the long drive to Murchison Falls National Park. In 2026 UWA moved the first rhinos from Ziwa to Ajai Wildlife Reserve and Kidepo Valley National Park, and its new tariff lists rhino tracking at Ajai from 1 January 2027.
The walk takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours on mostly flat ground. You go out in a small group with a ranger. Mornings are cooler and the light is better for photos. Your fees help pay for the rangers who protect the rhinos day and night.
Level 2, Easy. A short guided walk on flat bush paths, sometimes in strong heat.
Price (UWA, per person): rhino tracking at Ziwa USD 30 FNR, USD 20 FR, UGX 20,000 EAC, plus Ziwa entry USD 20 FNR and FR, UGX 10,000 EAC. UWA’s current prices are valid to 31 December 2026; new UWA prices start on 1 January 2027.
