Why you will love this trip

This is our classic week in Uganda: lakes, savannah and gorillas, with real people along the way. You start at Lake Mburo, the closest savannah park to Kampala, where zebras and eland graze and you can walk among the animals with a ranger. In Queen Elizabeth National Park you take a boat along the Kazinga Channel past hippos and elephants, and drive the plains of the north and the Ishasha sector in the south, where lions sometimes rest in fig trees. Then comes the big day: a trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to spend one hour with a wild mountain gorilla family. The week ends quietly at Lake Bunyonyi, among terraced hills and dugout canoes.

The people side is part of every stage. You meet drum makers at Mpambire, the Rurambira Community Conservancy near Lake Mburo, the salt workers of Lake Katwe, the women of Buhoma, and craft makers around Lake Bunyonyi.

You travel privately in a hired 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced driver-guide. Road days are broken up with stops, and two nights in both Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi keep the pace comfortable.
