Why you will love this trip
Murchison Falls is Uganda’s oldest and largest national park, and its heart is the river Nile. At the falls, the whole river forces itself through a rock gap about 8 metres wide and drops about 45 metres into a boiling pool. On this trip you see it from both sides: from the path at the top, where you feel the spray and the noise, and from the water on a boat trip to the foot of the falls, past hippos, crocodiles and elephants that come down to drink.
North of the river the land opens into wide savannah with tall Rothschild’s giraffes, elephants, big herds of buffalo and Uganda kob, and, on lucky days, lions. On the way north you track white rhinos on foot with rangers at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, because there are no rhinos in the park itself.
On the way home you spend time with the Boomu Women’s Group, near the park gate. The group was formed in 1999; the women show you their village, share a home-cooked lunch and teach you a little basket weaving. The income helps run a nursery school and pay school fees.
You travel in a hired 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced driver-guide and sleep two nights in a mid-range lodge.
